Become Your Own Health Advocate

I am frequently asked by family and friends for a recommendation of a primary care provider in the area.  I happily oblige because I believe it’s important for every person, no matter their age or health status, to be established with a doctor.

Then sometimes they ask – yes Kelly, but who do I trust?

Now this is a much harder question to answer.  As I pondered this question I could only come up with one answer… You trust yourself.  You have become your own health advocate.

Before you get overwhelmed and check out on me, becoming your own health advocate just goes back to becoming more intentional about your health.  Rather than waiting for problems to arise, it’s being proactive with your lifestyle.  That was my goal in starting Journey to Health.


So Where Do I Start?

I am glad you asked!  This is in no way an exhaustive list but is a good place to start.

Find a Good Doctor – Easier said than done right?  Well I would start with trying to find one who practices functional medicine.  You can visit the Institute For Functional Medicine to see if there is practitioner in your area.

Read Books – There are some great books out there to help you in your Journey to Health. THIS PAGE contains the resources that I have found useful in my personal journey to health.  I will update this list as I discover new resources. If you have a resource you think I should add, please email me.

Stop Taking Pills For Everything – Now I’m not saying that medications aren’t helpful and life-saving at times.  I’m thankful for antibiotics when they are used appropriately, and medications like epinephrine that save lives in the case of anaphylactic shock or cardiac arrest.  However, they are NOT a long term solution to our healthcare issues in this country.  Prevention of these chronic disease is!  Taking a more natural approach is the key.  Using food as medicine and incorporating quality essential oils for your overall health.

Choose a Healthy Lifestyle – We all know the basics right? Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, drink enough water, exercise on a regular basis, get plenty of sleep.  Even though we all know these things are important, unless we make them a priority it doesn’t happen.
